FIDE’s Chess in Education Vision Comes Alive at Chessturf Academy – Bhubaneswar
Ms Rita Atkins, Secretary of the FIDE Education Commission, visited Chessturf Academy following her participation in the FIDE Social & Education Seminar 2026 held at KIIT University.
Chessturf Academy, a fully organised phygital (Physical & Digital ) chess academy blending offline and online learning, showcased its structured, real-time student tracking and result-oriented training model. The academy’s Director, Swayangsu Satyakam, highlighted how systematic teaching and technology-driven monitoring are translating into visible learning outcomes.
With FIDE declaring 2026 as the Year of Chess in Education, Ms Atkins’ visit reinforced the global message that chess is not only a competitive sport but a powerful educational tool. Around 30 students attended her interactive seminar, where she vividly demonstrated concepts of critical thinking, strategic planning, and discipline using chess pieces—captivating students and parents alike.
The visit concluded with a warm felicitation by the academy’s Director and teachers, followed by the distribution of mementos to students and faculty. The energetic atmosphere reflected the significance of this moment, marking a first-of-its-kind visit by a FIDE official to a local chess academy, and a milestone for chess-based education in the region.
